Sketch of the day no 620 in my moleskine art journal: the DJ Istanbul

image

Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of my DJ friend in Istanbul. I promised I would do a sketch of him and here it is. As I said before, I’m not great at people but I am trying to break out of my comfort zone. I guess I’m a bit apprehensive about drawing people because they may not like my drawing whereas inanimate objects, plants and animals will never object ;p

Portakal Suyu Istanbul. Orange juice.

Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of fresh pressed orange and Pomegranate juice which is found at every street in Istanbul. I really miss my daily dose of Portakal suyu for 1TL.
I’m down with a cold back in the UK and I really feel like having an orange juice right now. It’s a typical rainy day as well. I so don’t feel like leaving the house today 😦

you belong in a boat out at sea

Dondurma. Turkish elastic ice cream. Ice cream makes everything better xx

Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of Dondurma, a Turkish ‘elastic’ ice cream. It is made with milk, sugar salep and mastic. Salep is a natural thickening agent made from the root of purple orchid,  and mastic a resin that gives it the chewy texture.
Today is my last day in Istanbul. It’s been an amazing experience and I am sad to leave.

Ice cream makes everything better

ice cream solves everything xoxo

Sketch of the day no 615 in my ‪‎moleskine‬ art journal: Yeni Raki. Anise flavoured alcoholic drink, made in â€ªTurkey‬.

Yeni Raki bottle drawing

Sketch of the day in my ‪moleskine‬ art journal is a bottle of Yeni Raki,  anise flavoured alcoholic drink, made in ‪Turkey‬ by distilling grapes obtained during wine fermentation.

How to drink Yeni Raki?

It is consumed straight in a small glass or with chilled water.  It is a must with meze, a selection of cold or hot appetizers like tapas, and is considered Turkey’s national drink. Yeni Raki is one of the most popular  brands. You will see people drinking it at dinner in restaurants in Istanbul and around Turkey. Drink in a group, with friends, never alone 🙂

Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal: Nazar Boncugu. Blue and white eye shaped amulet or bead made of glass to protect from the Evil Eye, a curse cast by a malevolent glare.

My mobile phone committed suicide just before the end of my trip and someone told me i should get an evil eye amulet to protect myself, so here is it. My luck should improve now and I so will yours since I am sharing this with all my friends 🙂

Sketch of the day no 613 in my moleskine art journal: red Tulips. Turkey’s national flower.

Red Turkish Tulips. Turkey’s national flower

Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is a red Tulip with pointed petals. The Tulip is Turkey’s national flower and is indigenous to the country.  The flower symbolises perfection and beauty.  Considered the king of bulbs, the Ottoman’s were so in love with this flower that it was incorporated into all designs during the tulip period.  Iznik designs use a lot of tulips in their decoration.
The tulip was exported to other European countries where they have been grown to have round petals
