NHS portait for heroes

Professor Janice Tsui

Today’s portrait is to honour the heros of NHS, who are risking their lives everyday on the frontline to keep the country safe.
I was bursting with pride to paint this portrait of my dearest friend Professor Janice Tsui, honorary consultant vascular surgeon at UCL/ Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. She is research lead of the North Central London vascular network and clinical lead of the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering vascular engineering programme. She leads the Multidisciplinary Foot Service at the Royal Free, North Central London vascular network.
Not only is she an accomplished professor but also an incredible supermum.
Tomorrow is Janice’s birthday and I hope shes taken the day off from work at Royal free London.
You are amazing and an inspiration to us all ❤️❤️❤️

This heartwarming portrait initiative was started by artist Tom Croft.

Once upon a time in Shanghai

Portrait in the style of old Shanghai

This week I’m conquering my fears and focusing on portraits so since I’m on a portrait roll, here’s another portrait reveal which I painted recently. I used my cousin as a practice subject and injected some old world Shanghai charm into it.

For me I’m treating my portraits like my other subjects, which is my way of visual story telling. I do spend a lot of time reflecting and talking to my art, it’s a personal conversation I have in my head that is then translated onto paper. Sometimes the translation works, sometimes it doesn’t but every piece is a step forward, ok sometimes sideways or backwards but always moving, always learning and growing. .
People tell me I’m a natural and I’m so good at art, no I’m not a natural and I’m not good at art, I’m just determined to follow a passion and put in the practice to get good at it. A good example is nobody was born naturally able to run or walk, you spent years practicing how to walk and then to run. How far and how fast you can then run depends on your passion.
Art is my passion and I will run a marathon for it.

My Portrait artist of week : Will Young

Portrait artist of the week: Will Young

Breaking out of my comfort zone…

I have previously shunned portraits because embarrassingly for an artist, I have a problem with face recognition, and technically portraits is a challenging subject. I am however starting to enjoy it as an exercise in intense observation, and maybe I will start to recognise people better 😂🤣😂

Last Sunday, I accidentally embarked on a challenging portrait painting experience whilst watching award winning artist Christian Hook for 4 hours as he painted Will Young on Sky TV FB live.

About 10 mins in, I forgot my mental block, picked up my art supplies and joined in. This mad marathon session turned out to be so much fun. I forgot to eat, my back was killing me, but the sense of accomplishment was worth it, and I am happy to be part of this art community.

This is my finished portrait.
