Malayan Tapir

Malayan Tapir

Today I’m back to my wildlife series as I’ve run out of pet portraits. I love animals so  I’m going to try to draw as many as I can and see where this goes.

Sketch of the day no 1495 in my moleskine sketchbook is of a Malayan Tapir.

Olive backed sunbird

Olive backed sunbird

This sunbird has given me so much joy. They have moved backed into my balcony after a year of hiatus. The chicks just hatched and the parents have been flying in and out the balcony raising the babies. I think there are 2 chicks but I haven’t looked.

Sketch of the day no 1494 in my moleskine sketchbook is of an Olive backed sunbird.

Lesser mouse deer

Lesser mouse deer

In my mind, and in my dreams, I would love to create an illustrated book of Malaysian wildlife. It may take a while, it may not come to anything but I will start with a few of the amazing wildlife that we have. The mouse deer is something of a childhood memory like elephants and tigers that you read about in books. It is the smallest hoofed mammal and only grows to 18 inches in size. In children’s stories, Sang Kancil is alive because of its shrewdness and wit. I’ve always loved this small creature but have yet to spot one as they are shy nocturnal animals.
