Life and art of Osman Hamdi Bey at the Pera Museum

Pera Museum is a beautiful private museum with a great little cafe and gift shop. The highlight today at the Pera Museum in Istanbul is the Alberto Giacometti retrospective set on 2 levels.
There are four more smaller exhibitions worth seeing. Osman Hamdi Bey collection, the art of Healing in Byzantine, intersecting worlds: ambassadors and painters and lastly the adventure of coffee in Kutahya tiles and ceramics.

Sketch of the day no 574 in my moleskine art journal: Turkish Cay / tea.

image
Turkish cay/tea

Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is a drawing of Turkish Cay or tea.  Drink it without milk in a small tulip shaped glass. It is offered as a sign of friendship and hospitality.
The tea is really strong and it is offered everywhere including shops. I have to pretend to like it without offending the Turks. Sometimes I ask for water which I’m told is ok.

Souq Karakoy, the uber hip bohemian meets hipster pop up bazaar in Istanbul Turkey

image

I was lucky and stumbled upon some Istanbullus who showed me the inside guide to the cities bohemian hipster scene.  Souq Karakoy is a weekend pop up bazaar which attracts the young and trendy crowd. The bazaar is a carefully curated mix of vintage and young designer fashion in a vibrant and artsy part of town.
I’m not regretting coming here to explore, discover and live like a local.
Happy weekend xoxo

Day 3 Flegere Brevent ski areas.

image
Flegere Brevent Chamonix, France

Today we headed up Flegere which was a huge mistake. The queue at the base was an hour for the gondola. By the time we reached the piste, the slopes were already slushy as it was a sunny morning.  We did a few runs and decided to head over to Brevent which has higher altitude slopes. We zig zagged our way up to the C.Bozon run which is marked a black but it isnt really unless you are scared of heights. It’s probably an easy red but there are some mogul sections down the centre which are probably the real black runs. We attempted the moguls but got tired and lazy and went back on the groomed section. Moguls are something I need to practice more on. I need to build up more leg strength to tackle them. As my friend describes my skiing, I ski like an old person ;p

Day 1 skiing in Chamonix Mont Blanc, France

The weather hasnt been great. Really cloudy, a bit windy and poor visiblity but fantastic skiing. Long varied runs. A mix of groomed and ungroomed runs. Totally empty in the morning with fresh snow. It became more crowded after lunch but still no queues and hardly anyone to be honest. Solid 4 hours of skiing. Im exhausted!!

First trek up Penang Hill this year 2015

image

Yesterday I trekked up Penang hill for the first time this year. It is a 5km trail that goes up to 2,723 ft (833m) I used to do this really often but I haven’t been for a while so I thought it was a good idea to tick it off my new year’s list. I clocked in 1hr 06 which I think is a fairly decent time.
The view and the scenery makes the torture worthwhile. Lots of pretty flowers, monkeys and i saw a giant blue scorpion and a monitor lizard.

Penang hill is the oldest hill resort in Malaysia.  There was a furnicular railway constructed in the early 1900s. Today it has been modernised and the train ride takes 4 mins.

Bulan Lanta cafe, koh Lanta

The Bulan Lifestyle is everywhere. This cute little cafe outside our resort is called Bulan Lanta. I saw it as a sign to check it out for breakfast.  I wasn’t disappointed.  The homemade muesli and yoghurt with fruits and cafe latte was just what I needed.

This is my little peace of heaven on earth and below is my view for the rest of the day. Life is beautiful.
