Day 5 Paradise found

Bulan Lanta cafe, koh Lanta

The Bulan Lifestyle is everywhere. This cute little cafe outside our resort is called Bulan Lanta. I saw it as a sign to check it out for breakfast.  I wasn’t disappointed.  The homemade muesli and yoghurt with fruits and cafe latte was just what I needed.

This is my little peace of heaven on earth and below is my view for the rest of the day. Life is beautiful.

Paradise found Day 4

An adventure on a fishing boat to Koh rok. A 2 1/2 hour boat ride in choppy sea conditions.
There were 20 tourists on this little boat and the waves were quite big. The first stop was koh rok snorkeling point where we were given an hour to snorkel before lunch. The sea looked rough and the current seemed strong. I didnt fancy going in but I thought I’d rather be in the water than on a rolling boat. I jumped in and swam towards the shore with my mask and snorkel. There were a lot of fish and some damaged corals but the visibilty wasnt that great from the churning waters that kicked up a lot of sediments. I used to dive a lot decades ago but I stopped cos looking at damaged corals upset me. Earlier on the boat I gave a polish couple a lecture about swimming with fins near the corals because the fins will break off corals and people have a tendency to step on them when wearing fins. A lecture which should have been given by the boatman. One cannot expect tourists to know how to treat corals if they have never been taught. Corals are fragile living things not rocks.
As I neared the shore I decided to turn back to the boat. I had had enough of snorkeling.  I took off my mask and started swimming back to the boat. It was quite a track and im a strong swimmer. About 50m before I reached the boat I heard a cry for help. The polish lady was in trouble.  I hesitated. I was tired. I discovered something about myself today. I didnt want to be the hero to save her. I scanned the waters and there were 2 people with life jackets nearer to her than I was. I hoped they would turn to help her. They were oblivious.  I looked at the boat and saw the boatman finally noticed the polish woman. They started to get ready to jump in to get her but they were further away than I was to her. I had no choice.  I swam to her whilst shouting stay calm. I am coming to you. I did my life saving course almost 30 years ago and I have never had to use it until today. I turned her on her back and I secured her under the arm across her chest. Relax. I have you. I swam with all my life towards the boat. She stayed calm and relaxed. Im not sure how long i swam with her but i was exhausted. My mistake was I changed my grip on her and she panicked.  She grabbed my throat and started pushing me down. I had to release her grip whilst fighting to stay afloat in the rough sea but I managed to. Got her back into official tow position. At that moment. I could see the boat man was about 3 metres from me. Only a few strokes away. I swam as fast as I could towards them. Made sure they had a hold on her and released my grip. I caught my breath and swam back to the boat. I struggled. I was shaken. I did what I do best. I curled into my corner and stayed there. Not too long after she reached the boat with the boatman. She looked pale but relieved. She went to squat next to the railings and hurled over the edge of the boat. I felt sorry for her.  Where was her husband. He was nowhere around. Oblivious to the saga. He appeared later without much care nor concern about her.
The boatman came to thank me. He said I am strong. Second thing I learnt about myself. Yes I am. I am strong and I am a survivor. Am I lazy? Yes absolutely but when push comes to shove I will buckle up like a soldier and march on.
With this thought, I went to sleep until lunch time.

The rest of the day was uneventful.  Life went back to normal on my island paradise. …

New years day at koh lanta was spent just chilling on the beach as one should! It was a Bulanlifestyle kind of day 🙂

Paradise found day 2

Day 2 in Koh Lanta. Well it’s actually my first real day since I arrived so late last night.
The place im staying is right on the beach and i was greeted by this stunning view as I went to breakfast.  I sat in one of the little wooden shacks for breakfast with the view of the sea in front of me.  Second thing I did was to walk on the beach and then I went to look for a scooter. I found myself a pretty pink one

image

I headed South to the national park and explored some of the other beaches on the way back.

Well I did some art on the way.  I brought Casper the cat with me and left him on the Hill at the national park.  He will  biodegrade. Hope no one took offense.

In the evening I had to set a Lantern free to bring good luck for the new year.
The night was spent at a beach bar where I ushered in the new year.

It was the perfect day. The perfect last day to the year !

Paradise found Day 1

Sawadeeka. I just arrived in koh lanta in Thailand. It took me a total of 13 hours from Penang to koh lanta. From one island to another via 3 minivans, a border crossing, 2 ferries and did I mention I got dumped by the side of the highway cos the driver decided he was taking me to where I needed to go but luckily I managed to get another minivan heading to the correct destination. I had to pay extra but now that I am here it was well worth the adventure.

First thing my all time favourite which is roti nutella.  Then a pineapple juice.  My hut is 50ft from the beach.  I cant ask for more. Looking forward to seeing it in the day time.

Best of Canggu, Bali, from my recent surf trip

Canteen

I sneaked back to Canggu in Bali last week for 8 days for a small surf trip. I went alone to practice my surfing. Well, I asked everyone I knew and nobody wanted to go with me, so I had to go alone. Sometimes, it is necessary to walk the path alone in order to grow.

It was a challenging week, mentally and physically. I have traveled alone before, but not often. It isn’t easy I must admit. It takes a while to get into the groove of not knowing anyone and being alone most of the time. It took me a few days to settle in. I would have loved to have stayed longer but I had to come home.

I woke up at 6am everyday to go for a 2 hour surf session before the wind picked up. Some days I did a late afternoon session as well but I didn’t want to exhaust myself. I was on holiday after all.

I spent the days checking out the local cafes and restaurants on my bike. I went to a few more but my phone kept running out of battery.

Canggu is a small sleepy surf area in bali. It’s still relatively unspoilt. There is a small expat community here. I guess they flock here for the surf, healthy lifestyle and the yoga and art scene. The restaurants focus on organic and healthy food. The whole place is really chill and laid back. I like the energy of this place, which is why I made a second back to back trip. I doubt it will stay like this for long. The pace of development in Bali is ferocious. Everyone is in real estate here. The tourists keep flocking in.

I will have to enjoy this little corner of quiet Bali while it lasts….
